Learning at our school

Primary learning includes whole-class, group and individual activities designed to develop an inquiring mind and teach basic learning skills needed for schooling and later life.

Literacy and numeracy are the building blocks of learning and that is why English and mathematics take up half of students’ learning time in primary school.

Find out more about what your child will learn at our school.

The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) is responsible for the curriculum, Kindergarten to Year 12, for all NSW schools.

For the primary years, NESA develops syllabuses for all subjects in 6 key learning areas:

  • creative arts
  • English
  • human society and its environment (HSIE)
  • mathematics
  • personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE)
  • science and technology.

Some primary schools may also offer languages.

NSW schools also offer special religious education and special education in ethics via approved providers, where available.

Like all NSW schools, we have developed teaching and learning programs to suit our local context and the needs of our students.

Stages of learning

There are 6 stages of learning from Kindergarten to Year 12. Primary school covers Early Stage 1, or Kindergarten, to the end of Stage 3.

  • Stage 1 includes Kindergarten to Year 2 (Kindergarten is referred to as Early Stage 1).
  • Stage 2 includes Years 3 and 4.
  • Stage 3 includes Years 5 and 6.

At Leichhardt Public School academic rigour is valued at all stages of learning and the classroom focus is on challenge, engagement and achievement. Our students are encouraged to take increasing responsibility for their own learning and to expect learning experiences to be meaningful and challenging. They are measured risk takers who understand that successful learners extend themselves with new challenges and develop thinking skills that can be applied confidently in both academic work and in everyday life.

Individual differences are not only recognised but celebrated and students are encouraged to pursue interests and explore different ways of learning with the emphasis always on quality.

The learning needs of all students are catered for in a supportive environment where students are given opportunities to use technology to individualise and tailor learning. A range of extension activities that include our art, band, string, public speaking and debating and choir programs enhances the formal curriculum.

Programs

Leichhardt Public School provides a diverse range of enriching programs for its students. There are special programs in music, visual arts, Italian language, gymnastics, aerobics and drama to provide a broad curriculum base which can be accessed by all students.

We encourage participation in our sports, fitness and fundamental motor skills programs . Our music program includes the highly successful band, string and choir groups which foster individual talent and performance skills.

We offer opportunities in debating and public speaking which help your child develop the self-confidence and assurance to make a positive contribution to society.
